Gymnastics building is being erected!

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

After laying the foundation in the fall, and allowing the ground to settle in the winter, we are now ready for the building to go up! In another week you will see the completed exterior, standing proudly next to Alumni Hall…more pictures to come-http://www.camplenox.com/orange-black/gallery.shtml! Camp Lenox is THE place to be for Summer 2012!!!(and ever-after!)

Staff Spotlight: Daniel Araki

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Daniel is probably the biggest world traveller on the Lenox staff, and we’re happy he will be taking a break from his travels to join us for his second summer at Lenox! Daniel has scuba dived in Brazil, Australia, and Iceland, just to name a few places! With that being said you can find him teaching campers all they need to know about going underwater in Shaw Pond! The avid traveler, photographer and food blogger also made everyone know his name during Color War, stepping up in several staff events! This jack of all trades will be returning back to America just in time to join his other Lenox friends in the Berkshires for what promises to be another fantastic summer!

More about Daniel:

Best place you’ve ever traveled to: The nomad’s home! I love to travel, and I have traveled to a lot of places, and yet there are so many I still want to go to. I don’t think I can pick one place out of all the wonderful places in the world.

Your favorite sport team: FC Greenie! It was our intramural soccer team, my greatest loyalty lies on my friends.

Favorite camp meal: I’d say pasta and salad with bread.

Favorite spot at camp: Underwater! It’s my obligation as the dive instructor to promote my sport!

Favorite all camp/special program to do at camp: Big Trip. Camp is a lot of fun, but it’s nice to take a break and go explore something new.

Earliest/first camp memory: Almost freezing the first night, sleeping with no blanket! First thing the next day I proceeded to the Health Cabin to get one!

Most embarrassing camp memory: Missing a perfect goal opportunity in the 4th of July USA vs. World soccer match.

If you had a super hero power what would it be: Teleportation I’d never pay for a flight or wait in any kind of line again!

Best Hanukkah/Christmas present you’ve ever gotten: A wide-angle lens for my camera. I love photography, and I’m a big fan of wide-angle distortion effects.

Favorite person at Camp Lenox: JJ, for his seriously funny personality.

Favorite chicken nugget dipping sauce: Definitively Honey Mustard!

Favorite location in the Berkshires: The Old Quarry, where we had one of our best days off.

Orange or Black: Burned Orange, UT Longhorns!

Staff Spotlight: Ava Paradise

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Summer 2012 marks a decade of Camp Lenox for Ava Paradise! This future Wisconsin Badger is a second generation Lenox camper, and is back for her second summer on staff. Although this summer Ava is on the tennis courts during AICs, you will most often find her around camp with 2 or 3 campers either hanging off of her arms or begging for a piggy-back ride! Last year Ava taught photography and was an Explorer Counselor. The Explorers girls (youngest female group in camp) are typically the first to sign up for their weekly AICs. Each week you would see different Explorer girls signing up for Ava’s photography AIC. Ava literally spent her summer enjoying every single period with the Explorer Girls! As one of the most patient and kindest counselors in camp, we can’t be any happier that Ava has decided to return to Lenox!

Best place you’ve ever traveled to: Paris, France

Your favorite sport team: GO GIANTS!

Favorite camp meal: Chicken patties of course!

Favorite spot at camp: Tennis courts!

Favorite all camp/special program to do at camp: COLOR WAR (Last year marked Ava’s first Color War competition as a Staff Member. She led the Orange Tsunami to victory in the 2nd event of the Trifecta-Song and Cheer!)

Earliest/first camp memory: Before I was a camper my favorite memory was coming up for alumni weekends with my dad when I was younger, I could not wait to get to camp.

Most embarrassing camp memory: Slipping down the stairs near Hex after cleaning up the Upper/Collegian raid. I bruised my butt!

Best Hanukkah/Christmas present you’ve ever gotten: My camera.

Favorite person at Camp Lenox: Luke Pettitt because he’s awesome.

Favorite chicken nugget dipping sauce: ketchup!

Favorite location in the Berkshires: Topsys! They have the best ice cream!!!!

Orange or Black: BLACK!

If it weren’t for Camp Lenox, I wouldn’t be half the man I am today. I never knew that my upper senior year would be my last, and everyday I completely wish I could be back in 2012. Everyday in school I look out the window and only think about the smells and sounds of the Berkshires. Waking up to that music is the first thing I want to do every morning.

Staff Spotlight: Mike Manfredi

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

The NHL playoffs are an exciting time for many of our hockey fans at Camp Lenox. This next staff spotlight is in honor of a second year staffer whose also a member of our hockey staff, this year’s Lower Senior Boys 2012 Group Leader-Mike Manfredi. You see, Mike is a die-hard Boston Bruins fan and can regularly be found updating everyone on the latest Bruins news, and wearing the “B” on his shirt around camp. The Bruins recently lost a devastating game 7 to the Washington Capitals. What better way to help cheer up one of the nicest guys at camp by featuring him on this week’s staff spotlight?! Last year Mike was an enthusiastic member of our Collegian boys staff, and almost led Team USA to a thrilling upset victory over the International Staff in the 4th of July soccer game! The International Staff prevailed in penalty kicks. Even though the loss was disappointing to our American staff and campers, we know that they, along with the rest our staff and campers are excited Mike will be joining us again this summer! (Mike redeemed himself later in the summer as he helped lead the Black Nightmare Male Staff to victory in the staff soccer match)

More about Mike:

Best place he’s ever traveled to: Vegas baby!

Favorite Sports Team: Your defending Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins (note: Mike wrote this before their recent departure in the 2012 playoffs)

Favorite Camp Meal: It would have to be chicken patties!

Favorite Spot at Camp: Definitely the hockey rink, otherwise known as ‘The Thunderdome’

Favorite Camp Event: Is there anything else? COLOR WAR!

First Camp Memory: Storming into the dining hall for first camp dinner of the year with the Collegian boys and girls last summer decked out in orange and black. What a way to kick off the summer!

Most Embarrassing Camp Moment: Mr. Lenox last year…physically, fine. Emotionally, traumatized.

Super Hero Power he’d like to have: Who wouldn’t want the ability to fly?

Favorite person at Camp Lenox: There are so many to choose from, but if pressured I’d probably have to say Coach. He’s such a Lenox legend.

Favorite chicken nugget dipping sauce: Either ranch or honey mustard… I can’t decide.

Favorite location in the Berkshires: The only one I know – Camp Lenox.

Orange or Black: Black Nightmare!

Staff Spotlight: Erin Somerville

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Coming from the land down under, Erin Somerville will be back for her 4th go-around at Lenox! Coming to camp for Erin means she travels 30 hours to reach the Berkshires yet by coming to camp each summer she has managed to avoid 4 years of winter to get 9 consecutive summers-kind of nice isn’t it? Erin is the Chief Girls Group Leader and can also be spotted training with our girls in upper camp as a part of our conditioning staff. Her accent always makes bed-time stories more interesting and her upbeat personality never goes unnoticed at Lenox!

More about Erin:

Best place you’ve ever traveled to:Nananu Island in Fiji – not only did I learn how to scuba dive there amongst some of the most beautiful dive sights in the world, but the Island was also entirely free of infrastructure, so the few people on the island stayed in small huts, spent the days on the beach and all ate together at meal times in a common hut!

Favorite camp meal: Being a vegetarian, I get to know the salad bar very well each summer

Favorite spot at camp: The lodge lawn – I love flex on those sunny days, when those who feel like relaxing for a bit hang out with some arts and crafts on the grass and catch up

Favorite all camp/special program to do at camp: I looooved Halloween last year! I couldn’t believe how well they transformed the canteen into a haunted house

Earliest/first camp memory: Unpacking in Hilton trying to understand my Scottish co-counselor…little did I know she would become my best friend at camp for the next 3 years!

Most embarrassing camp memory: Oh Wow. When am I doing something that is not embarrassing at camp? Very few counselors have ever let me live down the “bunny hop” dance move I did in staff orientation in 2010 (…Stephen Quirk)

Best Hanukkah/Christmas present you’ve ever gotten: Last year I bought myself a puppy for Christmas! I am so good at picking out presents for myself.

Favorite person at Camp Lenox: Barry Bergen, Duhhhhh! Not only does he tell you how it is, he is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. He is always there, ready to help everyone else out. It definitely runs in the family too…Lenox is very lucky to have a family like the Bergens :)

Favorite location in the Berkshires: Joe’s Diner – best french toast in the world!

Orange or Black: Black – from a girl’s point of view, as soon as those Color War flyers are thrown out, 99% are thinking, “Gosh, what am I going to wear for the next 4 days if I am on orange!”

Tooooooooo many memories!!!!

Staff Spotlight: Zach Berkowitz

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Camp Lenox is thrilled that Zach Berkowitz will be returning to Lenox for his 12th summer, 4th on staff-keeping the Alumni spirit alive and thriving! He is someone who truly bleeds orange year-round as a sophomore a Syracuse University. As someone who spent all his childhood summers at Lenox, he’s participated in pretty much every sport, activity and event we’ve had to offer. This makes Zach the perfect person to become Editor of our camp newspaper, The Torch. He’ll be sure to keep everyone updated on Twilight/Sundown league scores, what’s happening with special events, and of course… the odds and predictions of Color War Generals! Maybe this is Berko’s year?

More about Zach:

Best place he’s ever traveled to: Japan, to visit Tony Taniguchi (fellow Lenox Alum)

Favorite sports team: New York Jets

Favorite camp meal: Chicken patties and choco tacos

Favorite spot at camp: Sub-Senior Chairs

Favorite program/event at camp: Color War and rope burn (Zach led the Black Nightmare to victory in last year’s rope burn!)

Earliest/best camp memory: Winning classic relay as the Brave in bed in 2001

Favorite person at Camp Lenox: Monty (Coach) Moss, because without him my dad never would have come to camp and neither would I. Camp Lenox never would have become what is today without him. (Sorry JJ!)

Best Hanukkah/Christmas present you’ve ever gotten: N64… nothing got better after that!

Favorite location in the Berkshires: Great Barrington because they have great food!

Favorite chicken nugget dipping sauce: BBQ

Orange or Black? Always Orange for cuse..maybe this year?
